English 2: Practice Writing Assessment: Students had 50 minutes to read an article and complete a rough draft for a 3-5 paragraph essay on this prompt: After reading the article, "What if the Hunger Games Were Real," discuss how both the gladiator games of ancient Rome and the reality TV shows of today may be harmful to society. Use evidence from the article to support your discussion. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then we finished vocabulary 9 from yesterday. Then we reviewed the writing process in preparation for the practice writing assessment tomorrow and Thursday.
English 2: We reviewed vocabulary. Then students took the quiz for Unwind Chapters 68-69. Then we had circle discussions for the novel. A lot of interesting topics were discussed in depth in all three classes. Quarter 4 Begins!
English 1: Students recorded reading progress and read for 10 minutes independently. Then I introduced Vocabulary 9. English 2: Students took a quiz on Unwind, Chapters 65-67 and were assigned to finish the book for tomorrow. Then I introduced Vocabulary 9. English 1: Students took Vocabulary Quiz 8. Students who finished early had the option to read independently or complete an Honors Credit Assignment from the Teen Ink magazine.
English 2: We had a quiz on Unwind Chapters 58-64. Homework assignment is to read chapters 65-67. Then students took Vocabulary Quiz 8. English 1: We reviewed vocabulary. Then I gave instructions for the computer lab, and students typed their 3-paragraph essays about reality TV.
English 2: We had a quiz on Unwind Chapters 51-57 and then reviewed vocabulary. I gave all of the students two mixed-up essays, and their task was to organize them correctly by cutting and pasting the different parts in the right order. Homework is to read chapters 58-64 for tomorrow. VOCABULARY QUIZ 8 is tomorrow! English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then I taught them how to write an introduction and a conclusion. We discussed different kinds of hooks to get their reader's attention (question, snapshot, and imagine), and they took notes in their Writer's Notebooks. I also gave them some examples of each kind of hook, along with ways to transition into a claim. They pasted these examples into their Writer's Notebooks and highlighted the different parts of each introduction. Then they used their templates from yesterday on the Reality Television prompt and wrote an introduction and a conclusion for this topic.
English 2: We had a quiz on Chapters 42-50 of Unwind. Then we discussed conflict and irony, and students generated ideas for different types of conflicts and examples of irony from the book. They took notes of each other's ideas. Then we read Chapter 51 together and discussed irony in that chapter, particularly the description of the harvest camp. Homework is to finish reading Chapters 51-57 for tomorrow. English 1: Students recorded reading progress and read independently for 10 minutes. Then students completed a Constructed Response template for this prompt: Has reality television had a positive or a negative impact on today's society? They used evidence from the articles and/or videos we read/watched and discussed in class to support their opinions.
English 2: We had a quiz on Unwind Chapters 35-41. Then students went to the computer lab to type their 4-paragraph essays (rough drafts were completed last week). Homework is to read Chapters 42-50 for tomorrow. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. I showed a 5-minute video clip from ABC news about the reality of Reality TV. Then we held Socratic Circle discussions on this topic.
English 2: Students took a quiz on Chapter 34 of Unwind and were assigned to read Chapters 35-41 over the weekend. Then they finished their Constructed Response templates. |
