Today students took the test for Vocabulary Unit 5.

English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then I gave notes for the Writer's Notebook for Poetry Analysis, and we went through Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken." The steps I guided them through were considering the title, paraphrasing lines from the poem, identifying figurative language, discussing connotations, revisiting the title, and considering possible themes.
English 2: Students wrote a Constructed Response for Arabian Nights. They had a choice of prompts. They could either write about one element of the Hero Journey in Arabian Nights, or they could choose one of our discussion questions from our Socratic Circles yesterday. VOCABULARY TEST tomorrow! English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then we had our Socratic Circle discussion on The Truman Show. Students each had cards for the six different discussion skills - Question, Opinion, Agree/Disagree, Paraphrase, Example, and Summarize. Each student tried to use all six discussion skills. The discussions were very insightful and went well.

Then students wrote one each for the five different types of discussion questions for The Truman Show. Then they got into groups of three and wrote discussion scripts for the question of their choice. I intended to have them animate their scripts using GoAnimate, but because of technical difficulties 6th period was the only class that was able to accomplish this.
English 2: Students read independently. I explained discussion questions and discussion skills using the Prezi under the Discussion page. Then students wrote one each of the five different types of discussion questions for Arabian Nights. Then we wrote a discussion script using one discussion question. In 5th period, we had time to begin animating the question. CIRCLE DISCUSSIONS in both English 1 and English 2 tomorrow. VOCABULARY HOMEWORK due tomorrow. VOCABULARY TEST Thursday. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then we finished the last segment of The Truman Show.
English 2: Students took the Arabian Nights test. As part of the test, they chose one of the characters and traced his/her Hero Journey throughout the movie, including the Call to Adventure, Assistance from a Mentor, Trials and Temptations, Crisis, and Transformation/Revelation. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then they watched the second segment of The Truman Show.
English 2: We finished watching Arabian Nights. The test will be tomorrow. I also assigned Vocabulary Review 5 as homework. This will be due Tuesday, 12/17/2013. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then we reviewed the elements of the Hero Journey, and students watched the first 30 minutes of The Truman Show. We will discuss connections of this film to The Odyssey and to "The Possibility of Evil."
English 2: Students read independently. Then we watched the next segment of Arabian Nights. We will finish the film tomorrow, and the test will be Thursday. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes and recorded reading progress. Then we learned about six different discussion skills: Question, Offer an Opinion, Paraphrase, Agree or Disagree, Give Examples, and Summarize. We also discussed different ways to write good open-ended discussion questions. We went through the Prezi (on the Discussion Skills page) and students took notes for their Writer's Notebooks.
English 2: Students read independently for 10 minutes and recorded reading progress. Then we reviewed vocabulary words. We watched the next segment of the movie, Arabian Nights. We are now about 1 hour and 40 minutes into the movie. English 1: Students wrote a Constructed Response paragraph as a timed writing test for Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Possibility of Evil."
English 2: Students read independently for 10 minutes, and then we continued watching Arabian Nights. We are now about 1 hour and 15 minutes into the movie. English 1: Students read independently for 10 minutes. I walked around the room and held mini reading conferences with students, checking on their reading progress and making book suggestions as needed. Then we finished reading "The Possibility of Evil" together as a class. Then I displayed several opinion statements about the story and had students choose to either agree or disagree, finding evidence from the story as support.
