English 1: We read independently for 10 minutes and finished our Constructed Response templates.
English 2: We read independently for 10 minutes and then went to the computer lab to type our Constructed Response paragraphs. Today we read independently for 10 minutes. Then we completed Constructed Response templates for the article we read yesterday, "Do Manners Matter."
Today we read independently for 10 minutes and reviewed vocabulary words. Then we read the article, "Do Manners Matter" from Scope magazine. I also showed a short 3-minute video about manners, and we discussed both the article and the video. Tomorrow we will start a Constructed Response paragraph regarding the article and the video. Today we read independently for 10 minutes and recorded reading progress for last week. Then the second vocabulary unit was introduced. You can find these vocabulary words in the Vocabulary page under Vocabulary 2.
Today we took our first Vocabulary Quiz of the year! Students had to spell the eight vocabulary words for this unit, match them to their definitions, use multiple choice to fill in sentence blanks, and use each word correctly in a sentence that demonstrated the meaning of the word. We also practiced FANBOYS and AAAWWUBBIS rules and read independently.
Today students recorded their reading progress in their reading logs and voted on Homecoming Royalty.
Then I showed them how to view my comments and suggestions on their "Tragedy in the Bathroom" paragraphs on Turnitin.com, how to make revisions, and how to submit those revisions. Then we went to the computer lab or library, where students made revisions, saved the revisions to their backpacks on Edmodo, and submitted their revised paragraphs on Turnitin. REMEMBER - Vocabulary quiz is tomorrow! English 1 - We read independently for 10 minutes. Then we practiced spelling the vocabulary words. REMEMBER - The Vocabulary Quiz is this Thursday, 09/19/2013. This will be the last grade to be entered before grade check this Thursday. Then we practiced using the vocabulary words in sentences and also reviewed FANBOYS and comma rules. Students wrote eight sentences. In each sentence, they were to use one of this unit's vocabulary words and a FANBOYS correctly, applying comma rules. In the classes in which time permitted, they then traded papers and highlighted the vocabulary words and FANBOYS and made sure they were used correctly.
English 2 - We read independently for 10 minutes. Then we practiced spelling the vocabulary words. REMEMBER - The Vocabulary Quiz is this Thursday, 09/19/2013. This will be the last grade to be entered before grade check this Thursday. Then students got out their vocabulary sentences they wrote yesterday, and I divided them into groups. Each group had a Vocabulary Expert, a FANBOYS Expert, and an AAAWWUBBIS Expert. Within these roles, they highlighted the vocabulary words, FANBOYS, and AAAWWUBBIS in their sentences and made sure the words were used correctly and comma rules were applied correctly. English 1 -

For more review, see the Vocabulary page, Vocabulary 1. 3. We took notes in the grammar section of our Writer's Notebooks for FANBOYS. FANBOYS are coordinating conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. FANBOYS RULES: If you have a complete sentence on both sides of the FANBOYS, you need to have a comma before the FANBOYS. If one side is not a complete sentence, then you do NOT need a comma before the FANBOYS. We did two FANBOYS practice exercises. If you were absent, you need to get these and make them up. English 2 - 1. We read independently for 10 minutes and recorded reading progress. Reading grades for last week will be posted today. 2. We reviewed vocabulary words. Quiz will be Thursday. Each sentence is to include both an AAAWWUBBIS and a FANBOYS. Commas must be used correctly. If you were absent, complete this assignment on your own time and hand it in by Thursday. Periods 1 and 2: Students who were not here yesterday went to the computer lab and typed their Constructed Response paragraphs, saved them to their backpacks in Edmodo, and submitted them for grading electronically on Turnitin.com.
Periods 3 and 4: Many students in these classes had trouble yesterday with both Edmodo and Turnitin - password retrieval problems, etc. So we spent the period in the computer lab troubleshooting while the rest of the students read independently. Eventually everyone was able to save their Constructed Response paragraphs to the backpacks on Edmodo and to submit them to Turnitin. Periods 5 and 6: We read independently for 10 minutes. Then we had a Socratic Circle discussion regarding a poem: "Lost Generation" by Jonathan Reed. |
