Students read independently for 10 minutes. Then we learned or reviewed how to use the Active Expressions devices to take quizzes. We took the Essential Vocabulary quiz on these devices. If you were absent, you need to come in before or after school or during lunch to make up this quiz and learn how to use the devices. Students received their Writer's Notebooks and began to complete the Essential Vocabulary page in these notebooks. Homework over the weekend is to read. Make sure you reach your weekly reading goal by Tuesday! (No school Monday for Labor Day.)
Students determined reading rates and set weekly reading goals. To do this, we timed our reading for 10 minutes and figured out how many pages we could comfortably read in that amount of time. Then we multiplied that number by 15 (since the goal is to read 150 minutes or 2.5 hours each week). That number became the weekly reading goal.
We then went to the computer lab and set up our Gmail, Edmodo, and Turnitin accounts. Today I showed off our class web site and went through the class contract. Students were instructed to take this contract home, sign it, have their parent or guardian sign it, and return it as soon as possible. I went over the importance of independent reading and assigned students to read 20-30 minutes on their own every day at home. I gave students time to check out a book from our classroom library or the school library, and we spent a few minutes recording book titles and page numbers on our reading logs.
Today was Unity Day, so we spent time playing indoor and outdoor games in our unity groups. Students also received handbooks and class schedules. Real classes begin tomorrow!
Welcome to English 1 or English 2 for the 2013-14 school year! I hope you are ready to work. We will be learning a lot this year and doing a lot of reading and writing and discussing. If you are ever absent, check this web page to find out what you missed. Be sure to make up any missing assignments, quizzes, or tests.
